What is DEA Number?

A DEA number is a unique identifier number that authorizes medical practitioners to write drug prescriptions. 2 letters, 6 digits, and one check digit make up DEA numbers. DEA numbers are intelligent numbers, which means some of the digits are meaningful

The first letter represents the category of registrant:

  • B stands for hospitals and clinics.
  • C for practitioners
  • E for manufacturers
  • R stands for narcotic recovery services.
  • The second letter is the first letter of the prescriber’s last name; the number 9 is for prescribers who use their business address rather than their names.
  • The remaining characters are numbers.

How to do DEA Number Lookup by NPI?

The DEA number of applicants can be checked in a lot of ways. The 1st and foremost step is to request a DEA number from the practitioner, and you can do it by checking online databases like Dealookup.com.

If you know the license number and confirm it, you can directly call the DEA and inquire about it.

You can also use the practitioner’s name or their NPI to look up a DEA number. NPI Number is a ten-digit number used to classify health care partners.

After every 3 years, the DEA registration must be renewed, and an applicant’s DEA number can be invalid if their license has expired. The DEA will take around 12 weeks by mail and six weeks online to renew your registration.

Multiple DEA Numbers

The process for obtaining a second or third DEA number is different than the first. Before applying for another DEA number, make sure that it is necessary and appropriate for your career goals.

In order to get multiple DEA numbers, you need to have a legitimate business reason for obtaining them as well as meet all of their requirements for registration fees and background checks.

You would need to submit an application for each number. This is a time consuming process that can take months or longer depending on the DEA office you apply to.

To get multiple numbers, you must complete the following steps:

– Complete an application for registration

– Submit all required supporting documentation

– Pay the appropriate registration fees
