A Guide to Period Underwear

period underwear

Every woman has had their day interrupted by their period. Apart from the cramps and constant bleeding, using the best period products is the most stressful decision.

These different products offer a range of benefits, and while the most crucial discussions revolve around pads vs tampons, period underwear remains the best option for many. Many factors, including affordability, comfort, and lifestyle, affect women’s choices, but this underwear ticks all those boxes. Read on to find out why!

What is it?

Period panties actually look and feel like regular underwear. However, their design incorporates a thick and absorbent material in the crotch region which absorbs menstrual blood. This underwear typically absorbs larger volumes than a disposable pad or tampon.

Like pads and tampons, there are different absorbency capacities for varying flows.

Pads, Tampons, and Menstrual Cups

A large portion of women uses reusable and disposable pads, and this is because of their affordability. Pads stick onto the underwear and absorb menstrual blood, making them easy to use. However, they contain chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin after extended usage. They also comprise a plastic part and need to be disposed of separately. Pads need to be changed frequently, and while the up-front cost is low, this expenditure adds up.

On the other hand, tampons are absorbent cotton pieces that one inserts into the vagina to soak up menstrual blood. They are convenient to dispose of and require less time to change. Many women find it easier to carry out regular activities because it is barely noticeable when inserted at the right angle. However, they are considerably more expensive than pads and are single-use as well.

Menstrual cups and reusable pads are better for the environment, but many find them either uncomfortable or tedious to use.

Benefits of Period Underwear

Affordability

The up-front investment is five to ten times that of tampons or pads, but they last considerably longer. In the long run, buying multiple single-use products can build up quite an expenditure.

While one will need a few period panties to sustain continuous usage, they are reusable and will actually help one save a lot of money.

Comfort

Everyone wants the comfort of a pad without the nasty rashes or crinkly plastic feeling. Period panties are incredible products that are barely noticeable. It allows women to bleed freely without worrying about stains or leaks!

Longer Usage Periods

Although they feel like regular underwear, period panties are super-absorbent. While a super-absorbent tampon can hold 12ml of liquid, most panties absorb over 100-120 ml. Their capacity allows users to wear them for over 10-12 hours without changing (subject to flow)!

Eco-Friendly

Single-use products are terrible for the environment. Plastic is non-biodegradable and leaves a large footprint on the environment. On the other hand, reusable products make the most out of environmental resources and are perfect for Mother Nature!

While reusable pads are eco-friendly, they need to be consistently washed and dried without super-absorbency, and this becomes a tedious task.

No Risks and Side-Effects

Using tampons actually comes with the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome, a bacterial infection that damages one’s internal organs. On the other hand, many women who use pads deal with itchy and annoying rashes.

PFAS (per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances) used in most single-use period products are harmful, even at low concentrations. Researchers link these substances to cancer and reduced fertility as well. Worry not because most period underwear is PFAS-free and safe to use!
